A True Story

By Valya Boutenko

Valya Boutenko 2010

Once, on a long flight from New York to Amsterdam, I became aware of the fact that I was becoming unusually hungry. Luckily, I was prepared for this event, and had some tasty homemade hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, apples, and an enormous carrot in my backpack. The stewardess had served everyone on my side of the airplane and was quite surprised when my brother and I had declined the meal. As I unwrapped my lunch, I realized that I had not taken any utensils. I glanced behind me, only to find that the stewardess was many rows away and couldn’t help me with this problem. At this point, I noticed that several people in the nearby rows were watching me.

"Well, what are you going to do?" asked one person.

"She’ll be back by here eventually," said a woman across the way.

"But I’m hungry now!" I said. And without thinking twice, I bit into one end of the carrot and proceeded to quickly form a spoon out of it with my teeth. Laughter erupted from the people in the nearby rows. Within moments, I was happily eating my hummus and veggies with my carrot spoon, to the jubilant exclamations of my fellow passengers who congratulated me on my creative accomplishment and problem solving skills. I was so hungry that day, that I ate my own spoon!
