How to Choose the Sweetest Cherries
Cherries are one of the most delicious fruits in the world. These delectable little treasures are loaded with antioxidants that help keep you young. This summer, be sure to take advantage of the countless nutritional benefits of cherries! Follow the instructions below to choose high quality delicious cherries every time.
What to look for: Look for cherries that have a firm and glossy skin. They should feel plump and firm. Truly ripe cherries are quite large and have a well-developed curvy shape. Although color may vary from one variety to another, select cherries that have a deep saturated color. Like melons, cherries don’t ripen after they are picked and therefore, unripe cherries will have less flavor and fewer nutrients. The color of the stem is a clear indication of freshness. Freshly harvested cherries will have bright green stems. As the cherries age, the stems will turn brown.
What to avoid: Avoid cherries that are mushy, dull, moldy, or have brown spots.
Storage: Cherries are a highly perishable and delicate fruit. They absorb odors easily and dry out quickly, so keep them in a sealed container in the fridge or eat them up within a few days of purchase. They may also be pitted and frozen for up to three months.
One thing cherries are good for:Anti-Insomnia: Cherries are one of the few food sources that contain melatonin, an antioxidant that helps regulate the body’s sleep cycles. Studies show that people who don’t get adequate sleep don’t live as long as people who do. During sleep you can strengthen memories or “practice” skills learned while you were awake. Cherries also contain a compound, perillyl alcohol (POH) that is extremely powerful in reducing the occurrence of all types of cancer. Researchers found that POH stops the growth of cancer cells by depriving them of the proteins they need to grow. It has worked on every kind of cancer that POH has been tested against.
