Sergei has been dreaming of them since we were hiking a Pacific Crest Trail in 1998. At first, we knew only dandelions and sorrel. Then other hikers showed us wild onions and miner’s lettuce. Soon, in a small town, we bought a used book on wild edibles. It was helpful but didn’t have good pictures. Little by little, as we were learning new wild edible plants we became amazed at how much good wholesome food was available in the wilderness.

I recall how my children were fighting for the thistle. Each one of us had a small pocketknife attached to our belts that we used for harvesting. One day, we discovered that the thistle stems were somewhat sweet inside. Of course, my teenage kids started to search for these “treats” along the trail. Like on this photo from 1998, where Valya, myself, Igor, and my niece Katya are snacking on the wild thistle stems.

Sergei was eager to learn all of the wild edibles and wished someone created a stack of colored cards with photos of wild edibles.

Now, sixteen years later, Sergei has produced such pack himself. He carefully selected the most common and useful edible plants, photographed them and put together an easy-to-use guide in the form of cards. To add fun to the process of learning wild edibles, Sergei made them into poker cards. Now you can study wild plants by playing cards.

Today, we have received the cards from the printer and they look wonderful! Here is a sample card on both sides:
